Win 98 Run History

Post by den.. » Sun, 22 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
Does anyone know how to turn ON the run history in windows 98? I have
tried TweakUi without success. The history window clears on reboot and
I want it to stay!
TIA

Most of Tweak's settings are registry settings that can be duplicated
with the registry editor; however, clear run history is unusual in that
the only change that is made to the registry pertains to Tweak UI
itself.  I cannot discover how the run history is cleared.  Anyone else
got an idea?

Question:  Do you manually clear the Documents shortcuts by going to
the start button/settings/task bar & start menu.../Start Menu Programs
tab?  If you do, this will clear the run menu also.

Win 98 Run History

Hi

This is what I have found.
Checking "Clear Run history at logon" on the Paranoia Tab in Tweakui
removes the run history after rebooting. The Value Data is removed from this
Registry Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
]
If the Clear button in Task Bar Properties - Start Menu Programs Tab is
pressed at this time
the above key is removed completely.

To replace this Registry Key uncheck the "Clear Run history at logon" on the
Paranoia Tab in Tweakui and reboot. Open Regedit to this Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
With Regedit open to this Key go to Start - Run and type SFC - OK and close
it.
Select Regedit that is still open and press F5 and this Key and Data Value
should appear
and remain after rebooting.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
]
"sfc/1"

Hope this helps.

Win 98 Run History

Clearing History in IE5 will also clear Run & Find histories. Seems like
clearing any system MRU clears them all. A behavior I wish they'd change. I
suspect programmer laziness, or possibly just catering to lazy, paranoid
people who want to hit one button and erase their trail. Fine, that's what
the Paranoia Tweak is for. But leave some discretion to the rest of us, eh?

You'll have more control over everything if you set up .bat and .reg
files to take care of MRUs

Cryptic, but I think you provided me with just the level of challenge my
poor brain can handle these days. Thanks!

Hello Wayne,
No I don't clear any document shortcuts. Maybe the MRU run in the
registry needs hacking?

1. Dual boot Win 98/Win 2000: Win 98 won't restart or shut down

I added win 2000 to a Win 98 system so that I could dual boot.
Each OS is on a separate drive.

Win 98 will no longer shut down or restart.
I have to use the reset button or the power button after the Windows splash
screen comes up telling me that Windows 98 is shutting down (or resetting).

And then when the system restarts, Win 2000 has to run scandisk because the
drives did not close cleanly.

Any ideas?

Could power management be the culprit?
