frequent modem disconnections.

Post by vic K » Sat, 09 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Please help.
It's been very annoying to death. Each time I connect, after some time it disconnects with no alert or say:Connection to The Most Online(my ISP) terminated.
Reconnect?
Cancel.

I contacted over 10 times if I count to my ISP and they also are getting impressed of how many calls came in for this problem,we went in series of DOS copy files,to system rebooting, updates, update Drivers, and at the end? Disconnections!
When I download,it would get worse ,I get so angry for losing.Thank God IE5 has a sometimes pick-up-where-you-left-off thing. Anyone got any ideas?
I though of it,since a lot may suggest ways, here are what I made of my comp:
Went to modem props of Control Panel, lowered one notch to left in Port Settings, even till last left, tried lowering Connection Speed, but nothing actually changes, even putting to 118 or something(eep!) it uses the same dial-up,no change. Also in Advanced, put Software for Use Flow Control just for test, put in extra settings at&f or other generic type settings, went to Internet Settings of my DUN, put in uncheck for Disconnect if idle.... I tried all!!! What else!
My modem is  :Aopen Rockwell FM56-P 56k V90 Data\Fax Speakerphone modem. (just be aware of the P in FM56-P as the Aopens have a lot of different types in FM-56-_ )
Anyone to suggest?  I updated the driver which was v2.1.2.110 to v2.1.2.135.10 since on the Aopen page it says near this driver:Supports Sprint Canada, which is my ISP.there was a new version v2.1.2.256 although I didn't since this one was good, it did speed up very well the connection transfer, but the problem remains.please help!!!

It may be a phone line problem.  Try taking your system to a friend's house
and connecting from there - if all works well then you simply have noisy
lines and may or may not be able to convince your local telephone company to
do something about it.

Is this a winmodem, Vic?  You've done all the things I would suggest
that you do.  If your ISP isn't having a problem, then you have a bad
modem.  If it is a winmodem, that would explain a lot.  Get yourself a
good hardware modem, either a hardware ISA modem or an external modem.

The one thing you didn't mention, now that I reread it, is the port
speed.  You might want to lower it from 115,000 to 57,600 and see if
that helps.  I'm sure you've already checked the IE setting to
disconnect after a certain idle period, correct?

If I might add, as I found out the hard way, lowering the port speed in Control Panel | Modems doesn't have any effect if using Dun. However, lowering the port speed in the Dun connectoid does.

BTW, congratulations Patty. <S>

in answer,no I have a normal Hardware Modem, even though I tried putting Software in Use Flow Control to test.
It's an Aopen FM56-P and if I remember it is the second after the USRs expensive ones. And about the port speed I did mention that I know it's just for comp and modem communicating speed but even at the lowest one ever,it does a same interpretion for com speed.Unless the only way is to check my phone line ,maybe it is the only thing,as we went to DOS to rename some Winsock stuff, had some Windows login errors till we remade the Winsock thing normal to boot ok.SO I conclude that it might be a line problem,so as some modem or com port problem. Thanks all again.

Open My Computer, Open the Dialup Networking folder, right-click the
connection icon in question.  Make your setting changes there.
