Default settings for "Open" "Save", "Save As" etc.

1.  I find myself jockeying through these dialog boxes time after time
getting down to the directory(s) I am truly interested in.  They seem to
consistently start at some directory I have no interest in.  What can be
done (short of setting up shortcuts) to by default go to the desired
destinations?

2.  What is the text gibberish called which occurs at times when you open
a text file in another application - ie. Works' interpretation of a Word
Perfect file which shows unintelligible collections of smiley faces, ??, ``
##**(()), boxes -- anything but clear text??  I have on occasion received
e-mail with this display?  What is it?

3.  What can be done to correct problem where CTRL+Alt+Delete does NOT
bring up the Close Programs Dialog box?  Mine works maybe l out of 20
times?

Each program has it's own way of setting defaults.  This is not based on
Windows 98, but rather the specific application.  For example, MS Office
programs default to whatever is set up in Tools/Options/FileLocations /
Documents.  You can change the default location there.  They will also default
to whatever is the current folder, once a session has started.  However, other
applications may not have a way to modify.  I suggest you look in each apps
documentation or Help.  There are also numerous newsgroups specific to various
programs.

If the receiving program doesn't recognize the format of the sending program,
it will look like gibberish.  For example, if you open a Word or Word Perfect
document with notepad, notepad will only recognize text files.  You can view
many of these documents with QuickView (included with Win 98).

Can't help you here, although I suppose a bad keyboard could do this (can't
hurt to check the electrical connections either).  I'll leave this for the
experts.

1. Default view in "open"/"Save" dialog box

A few weeks ago, the "open", "save", etc. dialog boxes
started sorting by most recently updated instead of
alphabetically.  By right-clicking, I can sort inverse-
alphabetically, but I cannot view by normal alphabetical
order, except by going into "details" view.

However, the next "open", "save", etc. action will revert
to most recently updated first.   Note that the office 97
products sort alphabetically by default, but all others,
including IE, sort by date.

How do I reset the default sort order?
