windows explorer slows down

Post by Wendeli » Thu, 09 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I have a Problem with windows explorer.
When I start it everything works normally. After using the windows explorer
(browsing on the hard disk, looking into some different directories), the
program slows down extremely. After a while it takes a minute to show the
content of one small directory.
Every other program works fine at this moment, also browsing files in the
'open'-Dialog of any program is working.
When i reboot, everything is ok for some time.
Starting the internet-explorer5.0 seems to make working with
windows-explorer even worse.
I have no idea to solve this. No idea what changed my configuration.
Because the windows explorer is the only problem, I don't want to install
everything new.
Any Idea?
Thank you,
wendelix

Have you recently installed a new video card? The reason I ask is that I had
the same problem after installing a new card, tried every availble driver
and the only way to stop it was to reinstall the old card.

1. Window Explorer slows down (BUG!)

Noted that sometimes it takes ages to open a simple file folder?
No? Then open a search window using the popup menu, select advanced options
and toggle recursion on, now do a search on some file. Switch to the
'folders' view using the 'Folders' button between 'Search' and 'History' in
the toolbar.
Now open some directory: this will take longer than usual and may take ages
if you have something like a virusscanner installed.

OK. That's simple you say: do not change to 'Folders' view from a search
view. Well... That does NOT work all the time. After a reboot and starting
the explorer, the problem may still occur! Be very careful to close the
search pane before a shutdown. It may also work to switch the 'recurse'
toggle to OFF. This however is not 100%, since searching still proceeds, but
without recursion.

My environment Win2Ksp1 with McAffee Antivirus 4
