Easy Question -- Where is Microsoft FAX in Win98???

Post by Garrett Trobau » Mon, 31 May 1999 04:00:00

I am bewildered by my inability to locate the Microsoft FAX program in
Windows 98.  Normally, in Windows 95 it is located in its own category
in Windows Setup setup.  However there is now no FAX category located
in the SETUP area.   Is the setup program located somewhere else or
does it have something to do with the fact that I have installed IE5
and Outlook express 5.0?  Is there anyway, perhaps to install the FAX
program manually from the CD?

Thanks.

Please EMAIL response.

Thanks.

Hi Garrett

To setup MS-Fax for Win98 install these file in this order.

Locate WMS.EXE on the Windows 98 CD ROM in Tools\OldWin95\Messaging
directory. Launch the executable by double clicking the file or selecting
the file and hitting Enter. Follow the prompts provided by the install.
REBOOT when setup is completed to finalize settings. Once setup is
finalized, first time users will need to create a profile. You can create a
new profile by double clicking the Inbox Icon on the Desktop or selecting
the Inbox Icon on the Desktop and hitting Enter. Follow the Inbox Setup
Wizard instructions.

Locate AWFAX.EXE on the Windows 98 CD ROM in Tools\OldWin95\Messaging
directory. Launch the executable by double clicking the file or selecting
the file and hitting Enter. Follow the prompts provided by the install.
Setup will prompt you to reboot when setup is completed, select OK to allow
setup to *REBOOT* and finalize settings. Add Microsoft Fax as a service in
the MAPI Client Profile through the Mail and Fax Icon in Control Panel.

Easy Question -- Where is Microsoft FAX in Win98???

Garrett,

See if this helps.

MS Fax works perfectly under Win98.  These are the instructions from MS for
installing MS Fax.

RESOLUTION
==========

Run the Windows Messaging (Wms.exe) installer and the Microsoft Fax
(Awfax.exe) installer from the Message folder on your Windows 98 compact
disc.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Windows Messaging and Microsoft Fax are installed by running standalone
installation programs from your Windows 98 compact disc. You can find these
programs in the folder:

   <CD drive>:\tools\oldwin95\message\

To Install Windows Messaging
----------------------------

1. Double-click Wms.exe, and follow the prompts from
   the installation wizard.

2. Restart your computer after setup is complete to finalize your system
   settings.

This will install Windows Messaging and Microsoft Mail Postoffice. It will
also add an Inbox icon to the Desktop and Mail and Microsoft Mail
Postoffice icons to the Control Panel.

To Install Microsoft Fax
------------------------

NOTE: Microsoft Fax requires the installation of a full MAPI client, such
as Windows Messaging, Microsoft Exchange, or Microsoft Outlook 97.

1. Double-click Awfax.exe, and follow the prompts from
   the installation wizard.

2. Restart your computer after setup is complete to finalize your system
   settings.

This will add a Microsoft Fax Printer to the Printers folder.

ALSO : If I click START/SETTINGS/PRINTERS I have an MS FAX entry which, when
I right-click it and click PROPERTIES/DETAILS shows COM2:(Communications

the drop-down arrow next to the boxes.

1. Am I admin or am I not Admin, that is the question.

Hi,
  Interesting anominaly.

I am a member of the Domain Admins. The Domain Admins group is a local
member of the Administrators group of my laptop. In the Fax Service
Management console no devices appear for devices. Fax printer does exist.
When I put my account directly into the Administrators group and log off
and log back on the device is present in the Fax Service Management console.
I have the same type of problem with McAfee, I though I am in Domain Admin
it does not let me manage it unless my account is directly in the
Administrators group.

Has any one else seen this? Is this a policy setting somewhere?
