Trying to create a new table on Oracle 7.1.5.2 over OpenVMS 6.2 1H3 the
following error occurs:
ORA-01658 Unable to create INITIAL extent for segment in tablespace
HISTORIA.
This error is not reported in Oracle manuals, nor in paper, nor in CD-ROM
format.
Why it happens? What does it mean? How can I solve it?

ORA-01658 unable to create INITIAL extent for segment in
          tablespace name
Cause:    Failed to find sufficient contiguous space to
          allocate INITIAL extent for segment being
          created.
Action:   Use ALTER TABLESPACE ADD DATAFILE to add
          additional space to the tablespace or retry with
          a smaller value for INITIAL.

Or it could also be that you need to reorg or coalese your
tablespace if you a have version 7.2 or less and you feel that
you have  adequate space but most of these space is not
contigously stored ...

Mark's recomendation should work fine .

"oerr" a unix utility for looking up Oracle error msg on my HP indicates:

oerr ora 1658                            
01658, 00000, "unable to create INITIAL extent for segment in tablespace
%s"
// *Cause:  Failed to find sufficient contiguous space to allocate INITIAL
//          extent for segment being created.
// *Action: Use ALTER TABLESPACE ADD DATAFILE to add additional space to
the    
//          tablespace or retry with a smaller value for INITIAL

Add another datafile to the TABLESPACE, your tablespace has probably filled
up. Then try and create the table.

What it actually says, is that there is no contigues space to allocate
for your initial extend. Maybe you do have enough space. Query
'DBA_FREE_SPACE'.

The Oracle Error Messge is described below with a hint to
correct the problem.

You can either add a new datafile or retry creating table with smaller
value of storage parameter INITIAL during the create time.
