Relation between listener.ora & tnsnames.or

Post by Rick Collin » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get my head around the relationship between the listener
and tnsnames files, I'm getting confused.

In a simple scenaria of a single Oracle Instance running on a host
server and a single remote client application.
Does the tnsmaes.ora file on the Host need any values ? I know the
tnsnames on the client does in order to communicate to the host
listener process and that the host based listener.ora does.

Relation between listener.ora & tnsnames.or

I think this is the way it works, but I've never tried...

The server-side tnsnames.ora file is only used if :

You are executing svrmgr commands from the server console and you want to
connect to a database other than the one installed on that server
 or
if you want to use DB_LINKS - the server needs the tnsnames.ora file to resolve
the link location...

Others may have more ( and real time tested) info...

Relation between listener.ora & tnsnames.or

I know that you need it on the client. After it is on the client you have
to have a listener and have it stated. If you do not have a listener you
are never going to get it to work.

1. sample file of tnsnames.ora,listener.ora,sqlnet.ora please

I can't start the oracle intelligent agent to use the OEM.
I think something must be wrong in my .ora files.

If someone can use OEM,
can you post some sample files
of tnsnames.ora,listener.ora,sqlnet.ora,snmp_rw.ora,services.ora
for me to reference ?

I use oracle 8.0.6 oem 1.6 on NT.

Thanks
