I am about to install 8.1.6 on Sun that also has 7.3.4 installed (in a
separate Oracle home ofcourse). Is it necessary that I use this new
oinstall Unix group (which is supposed to be primary group for Oracle
user and dba is secondary) ? Or can I just get away with having only dba
group as before ?
I didn't find any document explaining the reason why Oracle wants this
oinstall group as software group (which means dba group members will be
treated as 'others' as far as unix file system level permissions are
concerned. What's the advantage in doing this ?
My reason for not wanting to do oinstall group is:
1. I don't see any advantage (other than installation manual recommends
it).
2. There are other instances (7.3.4) using oracle unix user that need
dba as primary group.
3. Oracle unix user is not locally defined (not in /etc/passwd but in
ypcat passwd). So not sure how to change primary group of such an user
only for one machine without affecting other instances.
Any suggestions ?
