Are TQueries with RequestLive set to True safe to use or are you better
to use TUpdateSQL with a TQuery. Database is Sybase.

It's exactly the same. Most of times.
The problems arise if you have unique index that is not really unique - the
field allows null values. Sybase supports this and it confuses BDE.
So with TUpdateSQL you have full control on what gets updated (inserted,
deleted), with live queries BDE handles it for you - allmost the same way:
it builds updatesql and executes on Query.Post.

Setting RequestLive to true is perfectly safe. The difference is in the data
traffic. When you set RequestLive to true, there are A LOT more calls to the
database, because Delphi must retrieve the metadata from the table too(so it
can do updates).
Contrast with that the ease of use issue...and...
