Converting "large" databases

Converting "large" databases

I have a 6.5.3 database with a single table of approx 8GB. The operating
system is Linux 2.2.16, which limits disk files to 2GB. I need to upgrade to
7.1.*

Standard procedure appears to be to pg_dump the database, then reload it
under the new postmaster.

Clearly, I need to pg_dump directly into a tape device, possibly through
tar/cpio, but I can't muster the correct commands. Has anyone actually done
this?

Incidentally, is this an unreasonable amount of data for Postgres to handle?

Thanks.
