SQL setup problem

SQL setup problem

Trying to install sql 7.0. Everything goes along well but towards the end
of install Dr Watson pops up. SQL Sever does not start. Connection to
server fails.

SQL Error log indicates "Performance Monitor shared memory failed"

Any clues?

(same results with SQL 6.5)

Not much to go on, but:
I'd stop all programs and services that aren't needed for the install.
