TempDB.mdf growth in SQL Server 2000

All,
Does truncating the tempdb log keep the size of the tempdb
data file?  Current tempdb settings include simple
recovery mode and auto-truncating the log at 60% full.
The problem relates to inserting large amounts of data,
causing a rapid growth of the tempdb.mdf.
Thanks in advance,
DVHSr.

Truncating the log does only that.  The size of the database that contains
the log is not changed.  You just end up with more empty space.  You would
also need to have AUTO-SHRINK turned on for SQL Server to attempt to shrink
the space used by the transaction log database.  There are cases where it
won't be able to shrink the log though as well.

This link discusses how to shrink the log. This applies to both 7.0 and
2000.

1. SQL TempDB growth/SQL 2000

If data in Tempdb reaches the size specified in File
Growth/File Properties configuration, will new data
overwrite, or exactly what will happen when data needs to
be written and the space is not allocated? Is there any
way to "purge" the Tempdb of its data without having to
restart? Thanks
