can not start SQL server and server agent service

can not start SQL server and server agent service

Post by Julie Sh » Thu, 30 Jan 2003 17:40:41

Hi,

I have SQL 2000 server on my PC. To avoid W32/SQL Slammer
Worm, I installed the sql2ksp2.exe and applied the hot fix
Q323875_SQL2000_SP2_EN.EXE.

Then I found the MQSQLSERVER and SQL server agent services
can not be started.

At the beginning, the SQL server service was started, but
the server agent could not be started. The errorlog file
is attached: errorlog - no server agent.txt.

Then my PC was restarted by itself. After that both SQL
server and SQL server agent could not be started. errorlog
file attached: errorlog - no server.txt.

Could someone tell me why?

Julie

can not start SQL server and server agent service

Post by Robert Thiebea » Thu, 30 Jan 2003 18:23:01

Cant tell you why it happened: I had a different problem
with the same patch and had to reinstall SQL due to time
constraints...

Grab Q330391

Things to Try:
Restore if you did this in the beginning:
Master, msdb, model
The install program will drop a backup of the files it
attached 2 levels deep inside the directories it took them
from. Put these back also.....
C:\winnt\system32\archive\0668 for example..
E:\MSSQL\binn\archive\0668 should be on page 2-3 of the
log. in C:\winnt\sqlhotfix\

Can you take a look and see if the file ssnetlib.dll is located in the SQL
Server Installation binn directory?

can not start SQL server and server agent service

Post by Bill Hollinshead [MSFT » Fri, 31 Jan 2003 15:44:39

Hi Julie,

From the errorlog:
{
2003-01-29 09:00:40.54 server    Microsoft SQL Server  2000 - 8.00.194  <--
This is the RTM (original) version of SQL Server
..
2003-01-29 09:00:58.03 server    Using 'SSNETLIB.DLL' version '8.0.636'.
<-- Version from ssnetlib in 323875

Quote:}

From the readme.rtf in Q323875_SQL2000_SP2_en.EXE:
{
***********************************************************************
This hotfix requires the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service
Pack 2. You MUST install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2 before you apply
this hotfix.
***********************************************************************
Quote:}

However, JULIESHI-1 does not have Service Pack 2 applied.

Thus, you should apply service pack 2. If possible, replace ssnetlib with
the original (194) version (caution - avoid doing this with internet
connection that has 1434 open, otherwise you may get slammed), apply
Service Pack 2, and then apply the ssnetlib fix in MS02-061 (as opposed to
MS02-039).

Thanks,

1. sql server agent service not started

Try 'net stop sqlserveragent' this will return if the service has actually
been started.
Then 'net start sqlserveragent'

If this doesn't work I would suggest cycling the server.

Hope this helps,
Robert Ware
