Memory Issue

Memory Issue

Post by <me.. » Fri, 27 Apr 2001 02:04:16

We have a couple of SQL 7.0 servers with SP2 on Win NT servers, they seem to
take a lot of memory, leaving only 4MB (physical memory) free. The servers
are High End Compaq Prolient 5500 and 8500 with 1 GB of phisical RAM and 2
GB of virtual memory. The number of transactions is fairly high. Is this a
known issue or is it normal or any workaround?

Many thanks in Advance.

Regards,
Mehul.

Memory Issue

Mehul,

SQL Server will take all the memory you have if your db is large enough. It
won't give it back unless the OS asks for it but if its using most of what
you have then its a good idea to either get more or just set the sql server
memory upper limit to a value so that it leaves enough for the other
services.

1. Lazywriter warning and memory issues (MSS 2k, Win2k)

We have a server that's been in operation for a couple of years.  It
gets patched periodically, no biggie, and it's worked like a champ
until 2 weeks ago.  Every Sunday morning at about 1:30am, I started
getting the following:

2002-11-10 01:28:33.15 spid1     LazyWriter: warning, no free buffers
found.
2002-11-10 01:28:33.15 spid1     Buffer Distribution:  Stolen=2056
Free=0 Procedures=1
                Inram=0 Dirty=680 Kept=0
                I/O=0, Latched=110, Other=0
2002-11-10 01:28:33.15 spid1     Buffer Counts:  Commited=2847
Target=2847 Hashed=790
                InternalReservation=224 ExternalReservation=0 Min Free=44
2002-11-10 01:28:33.15 spid1     Procedure Cache:  TotalProcs=1
TotalPages=1 InUsePages=1
2002-11-10 01:28:33.15 spid1     Dynamic Memory Manager:  Stolen=2057
OS Reserved=848
                OS Committed=723
                OS In Use=759
                Query Plan=25 Optimizer=19
                General=2658
                Utilities=66 Connection=48
2002-11-10 01:28:33.15 spid1     Global Memory Objects:  Resource=2492
Locks=42
                SQLCache=29 Replication=2
                LockBytes=2 ServerGlobal=50
                Xact=7

which then repeats every 10 seconds.  It does this until 11:34am, and
then stops.  Obviously something's wrong, but I'm not sure what.
There's no job scheduled for that time, the logs don't show anything
(the prior entry is: a checkdb from 00:02:15.54)

Last message before the error stops happening:
2002-11-10 11:34:43.58 spid1     Query Memory Manager:  Grants=0
Waiting=0 Maximum=560 Available=560

HELP!
Thanks.
Michael
