Analysis services - adding information columns to a dimension

Post by Paul Ecclest » Sun, 02 Mar 2003 05:17:28

Hi, I apologize if this is a real basic question, I'm new to Analysis
Services and OLAP in general.

I have created a cube which contains

Measure - revenue and gross profit
Dimensions - time, revenue type and company name

Against the company name dimension I want the ability to give more
information (not necessarily in a dimension) such as city, state, etc.
Ideally I would like the user to be able to choose what other fields
they see when they use the company dimension (I'm using excel
pivottables).   I tried putting each information field into a virtual
dimension but the pivottable tries to group on each dimension.  I just
want to see

                                                2003    2002   TOTAL
PAULS COMPANY       TAMPA    FL    33647        25,000  12,000 27,000

^^^ MY DIMENSION ^^^  ^^ OTHER INFORMATION ^^

Anyway of doing it?
Thanks

Look at member properties , if you make these details an attribute of
your dimension member on your dim table you can make them member
properties in AS.

Good suggestion. However, it also depends on the olap browser used by the
end user. Office, AKAIK, will not show the properties. Microsoft Data
Analyzer shows them.

ExcelXP will show them (Pivot-table > property fields), although I don't
believe this option existed in Excel2000

1. Analysis Services. SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services

SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services is the next generation of the OLAP
Services component in SQL Server 7.0.

SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 1 (SP1) greatly expands the
capabilities of client applications to provide local online analytical
processing (OLAP) and data mining functionality, while simplifying the data
definition language (DDL) syntax that client applications need to
incorporate such functionality.

I NEED TO TALK TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP ME WITH SETTING UP THE FOLLOWING:

a.. Data Definition Language Concepts
a.. Slicing
a.. Derived Dimensions
a.. Statement and Function Reference
a.. CREATE GLOBAL CUBE Statement
a.. CREATE SESSION CUBE Statement
a.. ALTER CUBE Statement
a.. VisualTotals Function
a.. DROP VISUAL TOTALS Statement
