database/object transfer

Post by Vive » Wed, 10 May 2000 04:00:00

 Hi,
My database is 17GB but we use only 1GB. To reduce the size of the
database I am trying to trasfer all the database objects to another new
database which will be significantly small say 2GB. I am on 6.5. When I
use database/object transfer utility I get all sorts of error sometimes
it does not copy all the logins some time it does not create all the
objects. Any idea as to how can I do this.
Thanks
Vivek

Have you tried DBCC SHRINKDB?  I would do that instead of transferring data.

Hi,
If I tried to shrink a database of 2gb(1gb on data file and 1 gb on
log) in which I am using only 500mb at this point , I get this message,

Current size of database Size database can be shrunk to
------------------------ ------------------------------
1022464                  1022464

(1 row(s) affected)

Objects pvnt further shrink      Index
-------------------------------- --------------------------------
syslogs                          data

(1 row(s) affected)

DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, see your
System Administrator.
I even tried to checkpoint and then dump the transaction log with
no_log but  I still get the same message. Please help me.

Vivek,

The used page with the highest page number sets the limit for truncating a
database. You are limited by the log.
You might be able to get the log-pages to a "lower location" by modifying
data and truncating/backing up the log.

But in most cases, SHRINKDB won't go as far as you wish.

Btw: You then have a case of reclaiming disk space. You cannot shrink a
device, so that would have to be done through backup/restore.

See KB Q141163 for more info.

1. Database Object Transfer problems

Glenn,

I doubt it's a SQL Server problem.  In theory SQL Server shouldn't be able to
crash NT as it's "just" a user program, albeit written by MS.

Set NT to take a crash dump on blue screen. This crash dump can then be
examined to see what is causing the problem, or sent to MS.
