Hi all,

I'm after a third party product that will compare 2 DB's and generate
scripts on the differences.  Ideally it should compare both schema and data
differences.

We are developing an SQL7 product and we what to be able to generate scripts
that can be run on older versions to upgrade their DB's to the current
level, before installing the new application.

What do you recommend?

Greg,

there are some 3rd party tools. I don't want to recommend any specific tool.
But at this moment I can remember one link only - http://www.sqlcompare.com/
.

The only tool I have seen is SQL Compare, www.sqlcompare.com I think, we
played with it here and were not very impressed. It does with very basic
databases with very little code or complexity, but when we tried it on our
beta to live server and compared large databases with lots of stored
procedures, it was not very intelligent on figuring out what is a change or
just a quirk in the scripting between the two servers.

I agree. SQlCompare is not an enterprise class tool

1. Book recommendation, please

I have been using FP for two years and need to learn about databases and
some beginning programming in order to make any progress with my company.

I know a very little about asp.net and that is the direction I have been
told to follow. I am sure many, many people have already done this and so am
looking to use their experience in recommending a book to get a newbie
started down the right road. Thanks!
