If you mean compact as in try and shrink then have a look
at DBCC SHRINKDATABASE and DBCC SHRINKFILE in BOL

Does shrinking a database improve the speed ?

P.H.,

Shrinking the database improve the speed? Yes if you consider the speed
gained by the OS having to read less data from the file, the disk drive may
have to return less data and so on...
I'd also recommend rebuilding the indexes. That would rearrange the data in
the database.
