Microsoft SQL Server Error Msg 3201 Device Error

Post by annic.. » Thu, 22 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

Every day I make an entire backup off the
database DB_1 and every 2 hours I make a backup
off the transaction log off the database DB_1. I
scheduled these tasks in the schedule manager.
The tasks have run properly for 2 weeks now. Al
at once I got the following error messages:

SQLDumpExceptionHandler: Process 23 generated
access violation; SQL Server is terminating this
process

Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1
Can't open dump device 'D:
\MSSQL\BACKUP\DB_1.DMP', device error or device
off line. Please consult the SQL Server error log
for more details.

Can anybody tell me what this means?

Thanks,
Annick

Microsoft SQL Server Error Msg 3201 Device Error

What version, SP do you use? If you are using 6.5, then I recommend you to
install SP5a. As far as I can remember, error 3201 was  present through
whole lifecycle of 6.5, corrected in SP1, again in SP3 ...

Microsoft SQL Server Error Msg 3201 Device Error

Aside from any bugs which may exist... the error message is telling you the
backup wants to go to that file, but it can't be opened.... Maybe the drive
or directory doesn't exist... Maybe the file already exists and you didn't
include 'with init' in your backup command... the disk drive could be out of
space... or maybe sql server doesn't have appropriate permissions to write
to the file/directory..

1. Help needed with error message 3201 (dump to disk device)

I am getting the following error message:

Can't open dup device 'f:\sqlbkp\srdb_bkp.DAT', device error or device off line.
Please consult SQL Server error log for more details. (Message 3201)

The SQL error log reports basically the same thing but adds that the device is
in use by another process.  This daily scheduled tasks seems only to fail on
every friday night and not during the week.  There is no task differences
between weekdays or fridays.  The dump device/drive has plenty of available
space and the SQL server has plenty of free connections.  The system is a Dec
Alpha running NT3.51 and SQL Server 6.0sp3.  I researched Jan98's Technet but
found nothing usefull.  Any help would be great.
