Large dimensions in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services

Post by bosco fernande » Wed, 13 Jun 2001 07:02:14

I am trying to create a datawarehouse using SQL Server 2000 Analysis services. I
have to create a time dimension which will give the user granularity upto one
minute. The fact table contains in excess of 20 million records over a period of
10 months.

I have tried the workaround for the bug mentioned in article Q281117 and counted
the number of unique members for each level of the dimension (year, quarter,
month, day, hour and minute). However, after 12-14 hours of processing the cube
the operation fails with an error of "Failed to connect to Analysis server". I
have tried this at least 4 times and have encountered the same error on each of
the occasion.

Article Q290211 says that SQL Server 2000 service pack 1 (which contains a fix
for the above bug) has been released on 4th June 2001 and gives a URL from which
to download it. However, clicking on the URL gives a message of "Page not found".
I have contacted Microsoft Technical Services, Sales as well Microsoft Servers
Customer Care (which should be renamed to Microsoft Servers Could Not Care Less
About Customers) but none of them have been able to give me the correct URL or
suggest a solution to the problem.

I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem. Any suggestions
would be welcome.

Large dimensions in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services

Typically, when down-to-the-minute granularity is required, you would create
two time dimensions.  One with granularity of a day.   The other having
granularity of a minute with entries spanning 24 hours.

Dear coleague,

The URL is the same and was updated today in fact. I already downloaded service
pack 1 without problem.

Thanks.

Alex.

1. Memory Error processing large dimension - Analysis Services 2000 Standard Edition

I have a fairly large dimension with about 2.5 million rows.  It had been
processing fine until I made some changes to the level hierarchy, and now
when I do a rebuild of the dimension I get a processing error about 3/4 of
the way through.   The error varies from run to run:  sometimes I get
"Process operation failed"; sometimes I get "Object does not exist"; and
most commonly I get "Memory error".   Once the dimension actually built
successfuly, but I can't get it to work again.

This is running on a 4-way Windows 2000 server with 4 Gig of RAM and a 7165
Meg paging file.  I have tried increasing the paging file (it is now more
than double what it was), but this has not helped.   I have tried stopping
and starting the SQL Server and OLAP services, and have rebooted the server,
but this has not helped.

Thanks for any ideas you might have.
