1. sql mail hangs sql server during shutdown

hello all,

sql 7.0 sp2/nt4.0ee sp6a

i have a strange problem.  just yesterday, we wanted to have some
buiseness triggers via sql mail operational.  we set up the mail client
per instructions and everything works fine.  mail is routing cleanly from
sql-to mail client-to smtp server.

here is the weird part.  generally at night, i have the sql server dump
the databases and then i script it to shutdown the sql service before a
cold backup begins.  After the backup is done, the script calls the sql
server to start.   however, the script and backup did not even begin
because the when shutting down the sql server service, it just hung that
service....i had to kill the process via tlist and kill.  everything
seems to shutdown fine if i have the sql mail service shutdown via the
sql manager console.  is there a way that i can shutdown that paticular
part of sql before shutting down the sql server service?  i use "net stop
service" and "net start service" for most of my script.
