Backup error - Can't open dump device or device off line

Backup error - Can't open dump device or device off line

Post by Andrea Balla » Tue, 01 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I am currently running SQL Server 6.5  on Window NT (sp3).  Whenever I
try to schedule a backup to run automatically, I get the error
message:

Can't open dump device.  Device error or device off line.  Please
consult the SQL Server error log for more details (message 3201).

When I run the backup manually (instead of scheduling the backup - run
it at through the Backup/Restore screen), the backup works fine.

Is this problem related to the rights assigned to my SQL executive
account?  If so, what rights does this account need?  If not, any
ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks,

Backup error - Can't open dump device or device off line

Hi Andrea
I am getting the same error, it started about a week ago.
The Tape backups had worked fine for about a year and then suddenly stopped
working.
We are in the situation that we can do no backups at all from the machine.
Disk or Tape.
Even NT backup reports errors.

We have same config NT4 SP3, SQL 6.5 with SP3.

I don't think it is a SQL problem though?

Microsoft could not help, the tape device was an HP device they could not
help either.
