Need help with ConnectionOpen error

Post by Harry » Fri, 23 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Would appreciate any help or feedback on my problem.  I am using VB5.0
Enterprise and SQL Server 6.5.  The problem happens when I attempt to
connect with the following code:

Dim rdoConn As New rdoConnection

rdoConn.Connect = "SERVER=NARDEV_HO_D36;DRIVER={SQL
Server};DATABASE=MRPASSISTANT;UID=MBHHLA;PWD=*******;"
rdoConn.CursorDriver=rdUseOdbc
rdoConn.EstablishConnection rdDriverNoPrompt

throws the following exception:

RT error '40002':
01000:[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNMPNTW]ConnectionOpen
(CreateFile()).

Other pertinent information:

Name: SQL Server
Version: 3.60.0319
File: sqlsrv32.dll
Date: 6/10/98

Thanks,  Harry

Does it work to connect with some other tool i.e. Access?
You are running named pipes, right? It can be a security problem in NT. Test
Readpipe and makepipe to verify.

Thanks for the reply Mikael,

Sorry, I probably should have noted in my original post that everything
works just fine on all our NT machines.  Windows 95 machines however cannot
connect to this database.  I would assume this has something to do with
authentication but I have absolutely no idea how to deal with it or get
around it.

You are correct in that I am running Named Pipes.

Need help with ConnectionOpen error

Harry,

Hopefully, someone else is jumping in.
The problem is because the W9x machine isn't properly "connected" to the NT
machine. It has something to do with access to the IPC$ (system) share.
You will not get the problem if the W9x machine connects through TCP/IP
Sockets NetLib.

Or you can also map a drive to the SQL Server (authentication done).
