active/active or active/passive?

active/active or active/passive?

Post by J-F Lefebvr » Wed, 30 Aug 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

We want to install 2 SQL server in cluster with a bay of disk. We have some
databases running with SQL 7.0

My question is what is the best choice active/active or active/passive?

Thanks,

Active-active is better if you can do it in your scenario.

Why would you say that?

I don't think there is enough information given to say for sure.  (And
granted, you do qualify your answer).

Well I am basing it on TCO.  There is nothing more wasteful than having
a standby server that gets about a day's usage per year.  You might as
well have it doing something, if possible.

1. Active/Active vs Active/Passive Documentation

How come there's loads of documentation about Active/Passive clusters and
hardly anything for Active/Active?
I've posted here before but didn't really get any great responses - I'm
hoping a repost may help things.

If we are in Active/Active do we need an instance of MSDTC per instance of
SQL?

The online documentation for SQL 2000 mentions the MSDTC Proxy and provides
no details, and I can find no reference to this on the MS site.

2. DB.Execute " DROP TABLE " & tblName , dbFailOnError
