Restore Problem with ArcServe's Back up Agent

Restore Problem with ArcServe's Back up Agent

Post by julia_sutherl.. » Wed, 14 Jun 2000 04:00:00

We're using ArcServeIT's Backup Agent 6.61 to backup a test Sql Server
7.0 (which will eventually become the active server) and it backs up
beautifully, but restoring is another animal altogether.  We get the
following error:

"Remote pipe open failed: time-out"

Now, the on-line troubleshooting guide says that the probable cause is
that the DBAgent RPC Server on the remote machine has a problem, and
that we should restart the DBAgent RPCserver on the remote machine, and
if it continues to fail, we should reboot the machine.

Ok.  So, we check the remote machine and see a Back Up Agent RPC
service started, and it seems fine.  We turn it off, and turn it on
again.  We reboot the machine.  We get the same error message.  What
exactly are we missing?

Thanks for your help,
j.

Found in my travels with arserve that you must(or at least we did)have
Named Pipes running the SQL server to get rid of remote pipe opened
failed errors.  hope it works for you.

1. Backup/Restore Question with ArcServe 6.5 Enterprise for NT and SQL Agent

I am new to SQL Server and I have a 25gig database that I need to test the
restore for.  I have a 2nd machine with the identical SQL Server settings on
it that my production server has, but my restores are failing.  The error I
am getting is:

E8603 Failed to write to database. (DBName=JDE, EC=Backup Agent Error - (83)
"Remote pipe open failed: time-out".)

Do I have to install ArcServe on the 2nd machine and do I have to install
the Agent on the 2nd machine?  My setup is as follows:

Server 1.

Windows NT SP3
ArcServe 6.5 Enterprise Edition for NT
SQL Agent
SQL Server 6.5

Server 2

Windows NT SP3
SQL Agent
SQL Server 6.5
