User Configurable DataMart - any ideas?

User Configurable DataMart - any ideas?

We need to create a SQL7 DataMart and template reporting set-up for a number
of related companies. The companies have similar requirements, but each have
their own unique flavors. They will each be running and maintaining their
own servers.

The idea is to create a 'core' or template environment with the two
objectives of:

* allow the individual companies to layer their own requirements.on the
core - enhancing the DataMart to meet their unique requirements
* have the core managed/segregated in some way so that ongoing enhancements
to the core can be shared with all companies without destroying their own
unique enhancements

A potential added complication is the need to make fairly liberal use of
OLAP cubes for adhoc analysis.

The approach sought is definitely 'KISS'/ '80/20', knowing that to create an
environment supporting all potential possibilities and entirely eliminating
potential problems would be far too expensive.

The DataMart, and any requirements that may get added, are not likely very
complex - so no gnarly issues like replication need to be factored in.
Examples of unique requirements might include:

* supporting an extra level of detail within some a dimension/measure (i.e.
by hour instead of just by day)
* adding a data element to support a particular analysis (tracking sales by
some demographic particular to the individual company)

The ability to create a proper superset of requirements up front is
impossible due to business issues.

As a 'newbie' to the newsgroup, apologies if similar questions have been
raised in the past.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, NM
