Do you also have a version of Visio Enteprise or an equivalent installed
(that uses MSDE)?  We ran into this error when Visio was installed after the
SQL tools.

Nope. Don't use Visio at all, and never installed it.

I think this is what happened. Yesterday at some point XP
tossed up a warning message about a file getting
corrupted. I think it was one of the sql dll's. I can't be
sure at this point, but i know when checkdisk ran on boot
this morning it did removed some stuff. Now I think some
of the base DLL's are gone or corrupted, which is the only
reason I can think of for getting this message on this
machine but not on any other machine. I just don't know
which ones. And I can't seem to figure out anyway to get
XP Pro to do a check to make sure everything looks the way
it is supposed to.

Wouldn't hurt to re-apply MDAC to your XP client...
