SQL Server 2000 slow down after SP 3 setup

SQL Server 2000 slow down after SP 3 setup

Post by Taras Gyorg » Fri, 07 Feb 2003 19:45:11

I have installed SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and I
observed a serious slow down of the activity - the simptom
is the same when the indexes are not rebuilt. I have
checked this, but there is no problem with the indexes.
Did anyone observe a lower performance  after SP 3
installation on a SQL Server 2000? And what could be the
problem?

Thanks in advance.
Gyuri

PS This phaenomen (slowing down) was observed on other
servers too after SP 3 Setup (but I can't verify if there
is the same story)

We have experienced a slow down that we have not been able to resolve
yet.  Some processing that used to take 5 hours now takes 29 hours.  It
does seem to be isolated to querying a specific table though and seems
to have some link to MDAC and not specifically SQL Server itself at this
stage.

The advice given to us was to update statistics, but that didn't solve
our problem.  Maybe it will solve yours...

SQL Server 2000 slow down after SP 3 setup

Finally I have conclusive results:

* SQL 2000 SP 2 + Slammer Hotfix works fine, no performance slow down.
* SQL 2000 SP 3 runs very slow and this appears to be just one query
that is slowing down everything - it is using ODBC as opposed to most of
our other code that is using ADO.  Seems ODBC is somehow negatively
impacted under certain circumstances by SP 3.  We have plenty of other
code using ODBC and performing fine...
* Installing SQL 2000 SP 3, then uninstalling and re-installing SQL 2000
+ SP 2 does not reverse the changes done by the SP 3 install.  The app
still runs slowly.

So we will be going with SQL 2000 SP 2 + Slammer Hotfix on production
servers, not SP 3.  Until either Microsoft brings out the next service
pack that fixes the performance issue or we can figure out a way to
workaround the performance problem we've seen in SP 3.

We have also experienced performance problems with using SP3.  We have
done some automated tests running against SP2, SP2+slammer hotfix and
SP3.  What we have found is that the slammer hotfix definetely
degrades performance.  SP3 degreades performance slightly more but the
big performance falloff came with the hotfix.  In some load tests,
we've seen processes times double.

Has anyone opened a call with MSFT?  We plan on doing this on Monday.
Does MSFT monitor this forum?  If so, we have a full automation lab
where we'd be happy to give you any information/logging you need.

With good test facilities like that it's a pity you didn't participate in the public SP3 beta.
It's very likely that MS would have fixed it before release then.

Yes, MSFT monitor and participate.  But this sort of issue requires a fault case to be raised with
them.
