Performance of output variables vs row data

Performance of output variables vs row data

When using ODBC and running a stored procedure designed to return a given
number of data items, say 10, will performance be greater if

(1) the 10 data items are returned as a single row of 10 fields,
(2) 10 rows containing a single field or
(3) 10 output variables from the procedure?

Any advice appreciated regarding the efficiency of different output formats.
