I understand that NT 4.0 has a software version
of RAID, while WIN98 does not. Is there a
software version of RAID available somewhere for
WIN98?

Not from MS - maybe a bit of shareware, but I doubt it..

Get yourself a "cheap" Adaptec hardware raid card
