Replication between domains where trust relationship not possible?

Replication between domains where trust relationship not possible?

Post by Juli » Sat, 23 Jun 2001 23:26:45

I need to set up simple replication between a server in a managed
hosting environment and our office (connection being made via a VPN).
Hosted end will be the publisher/distributor and our end will be the
subscriber.  Problem is at the hosted end our servers are not within a
private domain and the hosting company will not set up trust
relationship between our end and theirs because it will compromise the
other servers in their public domain.

I understood from SQL BOL that it is necessary to have a Trust
relationship set up between publisher and subscriber if the boxes are in

separate domains.

It has been suggested by someone that it is possible to still perform
replication if I have an identical SQL login on both boxes.  Can anyone
categorically confirm or deny this, or suggest any other means of
setting up this replication given the environment that we have.

I'd really appreciate any help that anyone can give me on this ASAP.  We

sell rare and collectable music on our site and I'm _more_ than willing
to bribe (or corrupt) someone who can help me!!

TIA

Replication between domains where trust relationship not possible?

The primary requirement for pull replication is that you should be able to
register the remote publisher/distributor sql server at your sql server
machine, if you cannot then it is issue with NT, that means in your case
distributor and subscriber are not within the same domain. In that case if
you know the IP address of distributor and there is a VPN connection to it,
first verify that you can access the distributor through its IP address
using PING <IP address of distributor> at the DOS prompt. Then you can
create an alias for the distributor using Client Network Utility, make sure
you specify TCP/IP as the network protocol and specify the IP address of the
distributor. Then use this alias name to register the distributor in the EM.
If this works, you can configure your computer as the subscriber.

Another option you may consider is to ask the hosting company to configure
push subscription to your server, but it would be better to configure the
things at your end.
