using an IP address to connect from remote SQL Server

We are having problems using an IP address to connect from
a remote SQL 2000 instance to a SQL 2000 named instance on
our premises here.

The syntax I am using in Enterprise Manager to register
the SQL 2000 name instance is:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\InstanceName.

We can connect to a SQL Server default instance by just
using an IP address.

We have changed the default port to be a port recognized
by our firewall.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we might be
missing?

Thank you in advance for your help.

You may look at this KB article
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;q287932). I think this is something related to your
firewall configuration.
