DISK DEVICE vs TAPE DEVICE BACKUP

DISK DEVICE vs TAPE DEVICE BACKUP

Post by xo5.. » Sun, 18 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I am still confused about the backup scenario with the INIT and NOINIT
option. Does it only apply to TAPE DEVICE BACKUP not DISK DEVICE?

What's the different between INIT and NOINIT option? I tried both. The
listing of all my transactional log backup displayed with INIT as well
as NOINIT options under the Backup/Restore tab.

And if I am relying on the transactional backup to do the point in time
recovery, does that mean I ought to pick the NOINIT option if it
requires for the DISK DEVICE BACKUP??? But the file can grow really big!
How can I clean it up nightly after the typical full backup?

Thanks in advance.

It applies to both tape and disk. The file acts just as a tape. You can have several
backups to the same file, each adressed with the FILE option.

INIT overwrites.

You were looking at the backup history. That dialog does not verify that the backup
that were done actually physically exists.

You have to have  a script/schedule/etc which does INIT at the frequency that you
desire...

1. Backup device vs. backup to disk

Are there any pro/cons to either backing up to a disk device or backing up
directly to a file? Historically (SQL 6.5) I've backed up to devices,
however, with SQL2K I can backup to a file. What's the practical difference?
It seems like backing up to a device simply requires more steps but doesn't
offer anything I can't get from backing up to a file. The BOL explain the
difference but doesn't mention any pros/cons to either method. Am I missing
something?
