In Direct Draw, do blit a off-screen surface directly to primary surface

Yes. I think that is't necessary... You can wait for vertical blank or not
etc...

Sure...

The Blt method performs blits in all directions.
Bltfast however can only by used when blitting from and to
displaymemory.
When useing hardware accelleration (like in most cases) there wont be
any
speed difference between the two, so just use the Blt method.

1. Q: Blitting 8-bit surfaces into a 16-bit primary surface with DirectDraw?

Is there a way to get DirectDraw to blit 8-bit surfaces into a 16-bit
surface? Developing a custom blitter for this purpose would lose the
advantage of hardware acceleration with DirectDraw. Also, it would seem
that DirectDraw has no capability for blitting compressed imagery straight
into the primary surface, which means another custom blitter and no
hardware acceleration.
