Post by Juin Yang P » Thu, 20 Oct 1994 09:48:00

I have been reading game magazines and was wondering
could anybody tell me more about 3D Studio ?

(1)     Like what is it good for in games development.
(2)     What is the full product name for 3D Studio.

Thanks

(1) artists generaly use it, I don't think it is that great personaly, I
am much more impressed with Alias and Wavefronts products (but not there
price), I am also most defenitly not an artist!  Are artists just switched over
to Alias, but they spent over a 100K to get everything...

(2) I think that is the name, it is published by Autodesk.  I have personaly
used some of the CSG stuff to build branches in the game I am working on,
it didn't work that well...

Quote:> 1) Being able to render long sequences for CD intros

Modeling anything and being able to animate it + get images

2) 3D Studio :-)

To use 3DS you will need a math co-processor and loads of memory (it just
about works with 8mg)

It is a 3d interactive modelling & rendering package by AUtodesk...
the full product name is 3d Studio... It is wonderful (as is any decent 3d modeller)
for 3D games object creations, raytracing etc. Stuff Like Strike commander,
Xwing, Wing commander armada etc... It is a professional developmental tool
and runs as I recall a tag of $3000 dollars... Yes, 3K dollars.

:   1) Big intros, rendering sprites, anything that moves really. Beware
:     though that EVERYTHING has perspective, you can't do FLAT renders.
:      We use it mainly for CD intros at the moment. Although we've dumped
:      3ds in favour of SG machines with Alias and Wavefront <grin>.
:   2) It's called 3d studio from Autodesk currently version 3 although
:     there are rumours of v4 appearing soon so hang on to your $$$.

:   We run it on a VLM 486DX2/66 with 32Mb of RAM and all mod cons. and
:   3DS still takes a long time to render the final animation, although
:   it is quite nippy when it comes to modelling.
:    Good luck,

Allow me to grokulate... A tad... 3D modelling (theres that word again)
has an excellent text available called 3D modelling lab by Phillip
Shaddock and published by the waite group....
Here as Capt'n Kirk would say is the Fizbin #... ISBN 1-878739-52-2
(A number only a mother computer could love :)).
It is an exceptional starting text and comes w/ a VERY powerful
3D modeller, render'er'er'er, and raytracer... Called Imagine...
For like $39 it is one of the BEST buys I have encountUrd in some 15 years.
Buy it you will not be solly.

3DS is a far more proficient package at $3000... But lightwave's out there
and true space 3D for windows is supposed to rival # 3ds I'm told...
Ceratinly a TON easier to use as it's under windows where 3ds is dos.

This is again, like computer programming & design phases modelling...
Nothing more nothing less... You build an object be it 2D or 3D using
parts and cuttin' glue'n etc... Just like a plastic kit...
Computer programming can be considered as the same light... Paste, cut glue,
design etc...

BTW... As I've stated before... To reduce BIGTIME! code burn out and still
keep in the creative mindset plastic or wood etc scale modelling is an
exceptiona;l sideline... It was fun when I was young, and, staring out
at the 40+ car models I've constructed over the past 4 years it is still
ALOT of fun...

I think you CAN do flat renders (or else I don't understand what you mean
by Flat renders) If you choose 'render view' and you click on 'top view',
it will render without perspective...

A friend of mine was running 3DS with 8Mb, and he upgraded to 20Mb, but I
didn't see such a big difference...

Sorry RG, but this is a totally stupid thing to say, if it werent for the
usual legal jiggery pokery, 3ds could look EXACTLY like any windows app,
and work about 40% faster.

As for modellers, I agree that I quite like some of imagine, although it
CAN be complex to use, 3ds is nice, but is IMHO not very good quality
output, truespace is nice, but slow and heavy on the resources, crystal
3d is pretty poor but fast, topaz I havent tried, I just cant seem to find
something that gives excellent quality, preferably of different levels
from say, raytracing/radiosity, so flat shading etc..

I dont imagine ever using a windows based renderer, I just hope I can
get my interface sorted for my own real-time modeller+renderer package
in time for the end of my degree..

One thing, if povray source is available, and many other raytracers etc,
why is it that it seems like only the amiga renderers are being sold so
cheaply?? things like imagine, pixel3d and such are given away (old vers
maybe, but still free) on cover disks.. while the pc is stuck with 1000
command line rendereds, and seldom few good modellers.
