IBM 6400 printer ethernet attached, does not print

Post by Ralph Frisc » Fri, 15 Dec 2000 08:41:53

My search on deja did not obtain the answer to my problem, however there
were several messages dealing with this printer in comp.sys.ibm.as400.misc.

I have a new IBM 6400 which was purchased with the IBM etherernet
attachment. After configuring its ethernet
parameters, namely IP, gateway and subnet mask, I can successfully ping it.
I can also connect to it via FTP, telnet and HTTP://IP. However all my
attempts to print to it have failed.

I tried printing to it by FTPing to /dest/d1prn.
I tried the print test via telnet, ie start fox prn.
I have also defined it on my PC and sent a test page to it.

Has anyone encountered this this problem?

I have found that the occasional hardware reset (off then on) and then stop then
restart the queues help...if IP stops talking, it gets ignored.

Try to set up an entry for the printer in the hosts table of the AS/400 or
in your DNS server, then configure outq or the PRT device naming the printer
and not using Its IP address.

I think that it is becouse the LPR-LPD protocols need some form of name
resolution.

It's been a while since I set ours up but If I remember correctly you have
to use the epson emulation on the printer. Try it and see. Hope it helps.

Ralph, If you are trying to print to it from the AS/400, you have three
options:
1) purchase IPDS feature and use PSF/400 (also requires you to purchase
PSF/400...if you don't have it already).
2) Use the SNMP printer driver support (in base of V4R5 and PTF'd to V4R3 and
V4R4)
3) Remote writer support (or the LPR printer driver exit tool in QUSRTOOL)

Check out the AS/400 Software knowledge database.  There are articles on each
of the subjects which includes configuration and PTF numbers.

1. IBM 6400 including MPI (fc4831) does not work.

Dear All,

I have a problem with an IBM 6400 P50 printer
including a MPI feature.

This printer is attached through twinax to our AS400.
The purpose of this printer is printing Barcodes on doucuments.
The software uses the MAGNUM V code.

Once attached the AS recognizes the printer and makes a
description.
When you want to print something the system says that the printer isn't
online or whatever.
You have push the START/STOP button etc etc.

We've tested the MPI and it works properly !

Can somebody help me ??

Please if not too much trouble sent me an e-mail on

Thanx in advance.

Robert
