STRHOSTSVR in QSTRUP does not work properly

Post by Dave Stubb » Mon, 18 May 1998 04:00:00

Once a week, when our three AS/400s re IPL, as part of their startup
sequence I have included a call to STRHOSTSVR *ALL to start all host
services, in particular the client access host connection service.

Only one of the three AS/400s actually allows connection after startup has
finished, the other two need the STRHOSTSVR command to be typed in again to
allow PC access.

The Machine that does work is running a beta of V4R2 and the two that don't
are running V3R6 and V3R7.

Does anyone have any insight or experience of this problem.

TIA:

Dave Stubbs

Dave,

We had that problem until recently (V3r2 & V3r7) - found out it was a
security problem with STRHOSTSVR command.  Changed it to allow
QPGMR to have authority and now works fine. Hope this helps.

STRHOSTSVR in QSTRUP does not work properly

Hi David,

Usually this is due to a needed delay between starting things or the
security of the start commands. For more information, see

Have you written before the STRHOSTSVR cmd STRTCP?

Cheers,
Dennis

Put a DLYJOB DLY(120) after STRTCP and before STRHOSTSVR.
STRTCP does not prevent the next CL statement to execute before it is
completed.
So STRHOSTSVR may not run properly because some of the STRTCP actions are
not yet finished.
You can't predict when it works or not, that explains your different
results.

If you don't want to waste time, put STRTCP at top of your startup CL,
STRHOSTSVR at the end.

1. STRPCCMD should not work but does; RUNRMTCMD should work but does not

According to the documentation (Client Access Family) the way to run a PC
command from an AS/400 session is STRPCCMD for DOS, Windows 3.1 and OS/2.
For Windows 95/NT one should use RUNRMTCMD.  However, on my PC (Windows 95,
twinax, NetSoft router, CA V3R1M2, OS/400 V3R2) STRPCCMD does work but
RUNRMTCMD does not.

For RUNRMTCMD the daemon program AREXECDN.EXE should be running on the PC.
This has been installed on the PC, but when I start it, it does not seem to
do anything.  No information, no process running.  When I try RUNRMTCMD from
an AS/400 session, the job log says that the remote system 'did not
recognize the transaction program' (quoting from memory).

Any ideas why STRPCCMD appears to be unsupported?  Will it suddenly vanish
in a future release?  Will it not work with TCP/IP (not with V3R1M2 anyway;
the session is not recognized as a PC session)?

Any ideas how I could get RUNRMTCMD to work?
