Flex/IP - LPD and AS/400 -LPR Does not always work!

Post by Enzo Polet » Sat, 19 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hello list,

I wonder if anyone is familiar with Flex/IP software that runs in a
Netware environment as an LPD agent.

I have defined several remote output queues in our AS/400 (type *IP),
each one linked to a Novell printer queue. Every single definition
works fine, except for a specific one that does generate a print-out,
but in a weird way: the 3-page spool is printed in 7 pages, totally
misformatted.

The funny thing is that I do have a similar configuration (same *OUTQ
definition, same printer type, same Flex/IP configuration) that has no
problems.

I tried to delete everything from the wrong configuration and copy
from the one that works, without any success.

I'd appreciate any sugestions, mainly to pinpoint any troubleshooting
technique to understand what's going on...

Thank you

Enzo

We are using Flex/IP too for the same scenario. It works pretty well.
You might also want to look at the way the Novell queue is defined on
the LAN side. I'm not a Novell expert but there are several different
parms related to the way the queue is set up. There could be a problem
there.

Another thing is the actual printers. Are they exactly the same type.
Are you current on AS/400 maintenance? If not, I would suggest getting
the latest PTFs and if you customized a WSCST, be sure to retrieve the
new source and make the modifications again.

Email me if you like with other questions.

1. STRPCCMD should not work but does; RUNRMTCMD should work but does not

According to the documentation (Client Access Family) the way to run a PC
command from an AS/400 session is STRPCCMD for DOS, Windows 3.1 and OS/2.
For Windows 95/NT one should use RUNRMTCMD.  However, on my PC (Windows 95,
twinax, NetSoft router, CA V3R1M2, OS/400 V3R2) STRPCCMD does work but
RUNRMTCMD does not.

For RUNRMTCMD the daemon program AREXECDN.EXE should be running on the PC.
This has been installed on the PC, but when I start it, it does not seem to
do anything.  No information, no process running.  When I try RUNRMTCMD from
an AS/400 session, the job log says that the remote system 'did not
recognize the transaction program' (quoting from memory).

Any ideas why STRPCCMD appears to be unsupported?  Will it suddenly vanish
in a future release?  Will it not work with TCP/IP (not with V3R1M2 anyway;
the session is not recognized as a PC session)?

Any ideas how I could get RUNRMTCMD to work?
