Network Printing to HP772C

Network Printing to HP772C

Post by seldo.. » Sat, 05 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Here is my setup (I didnt set up this network).  There are two Win98 SE
machines hooked up over Microsoft Networking with a crossover cable.
There is an HP772C hooked up to one of the computers (compA) that is
shared between both of the computers.  Now, here is the problem.  When
something is printed from compA, everything works normally.  However,
when documents are printed from compB, sometimes they dont print at
all, or print some of the copies, but less than the number of copies
that were requested.  This problem generally occurs when multiple
copies are requested.  The network seems to be working ok because all
other network functions are available (i.e. filesharing, etc.).  I have
checked the print queue on compA and compB to make sure that it is
working and sometimes it seems like the documents dont even get queued
when documents are printed from compB.  I have checked to make sure
that the most recent drivers are on the computers and it seems to be
the most recent.  I cannot think of what to do to resolve the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  I will try to answer anyone's
questions about the setup or what all has been done if that will help.
Thank you.

By HP772c do you mean an HP722c?  If so, read on, otherwise what I
have to say probably doesn't apply to your printer, so ignore me.

You say you have the latest drivers installed.  I assume this is
v10.3.  If so, you need to go to the HP INI file editing program
(hp?cfg*.exe) and turn off "Bi-directional Communication" and "Print
Cartridge Query".  It sort of sounds like you might not have done this,
but I can't really tell from the symptoms you describe.  Normally
printing just doesn't work.  Eventually I need to update my HP722c web
page to include this technique.

1. W95 network print oddities... need help from network problem solvers!

Facts:
I have a small LAN with three 486 66's on it.
Two machines run Windows 95, and one runs WFW 3.11.
The WFW machine has 12mg RAM, one of the W95 machines has 24 and the
other 36 (don't ask me why Packard Bell wired in 4mg...).
The WFW machine has an attached NEC Silentwriter, and the 36mg W95
machine has a DEClaser 3500.

Symptoms:
The WFW machine can print on both printers
The 36mg W95 machine can print on both printers
The 24mg W95 machine can print on only the WFW (Silentwriter) printer
-- not to the DEC printer attached to the other W95 machine

More facts:
        Both printers are shared
All hd's are shared and are accesible by all machines just fine
When I look at the network from the computer that can't print on the
DEC printer, I see the DEC printer (as I should be able to) attached
to the correct machine
I can install the printer driver in both normal ways (from my machine
or dragging and dropping from a machine on the  network)

More Symptoms:
When printing a document (even just a test page from W95) normal
things occur on the machine that contains the document (the 24 mg
machine) but nothing occurs -- never even a momentary "processing"
from the DEC.
Occasionally (not fully tested,) when I turn off the machine that the
printer is physically attached to, the printer will kick out the
documents I have been attempting to print to it.... odd... (sounds
like a tempting clue, but I can't figure out what it means)

HERE'S THE KICKER:
If I put the printer on the other W95 machine, the exact same thing
happens in reverse (which should mean that it is not a problem with
the individual machine setups, ... right?... unless it is a problem
that they both have, but then why would the WFW machine be able to
print on the DEC?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
