Difference between LaserJet 4L and 4ML?

The "M" probably also has more RAM and an AppleTalk interface.  In
general, on HP printers, if you need PostScript, it is cheaper to buy
the "M" version than to upgrade the non-M version using add-on PS and
RAM SIMMs (even non-HP RAM SIMMs).  My 4MPlus came with an MIO
networking card, which I didn't need, and brought in enough when I sold
it to fund some more RAM.

I don't know.  It is possible on the LJ4, LJ4Plus and 4si.

Difference between LaserJet 4L and 4ML?

The only difference between the two is the PS cartridge, and more ram to
support it. Yes, as far as I know, it's upgradable (the 4p is for sure) but you
eventually pay more. To bring it up to spec you need 6megs of ram
[($200)2+4more]  and the PS cartridge ($400). If you can cover the stroke
up front it's a better way to go.

Why not? You just have to buy the cartridge from HP. That's what the
hinged door is for on the left side of the printer face. Check it out and see.
( I'm looking at a 4p even as I type. Same chassis, different engine).

The 4ML has more RAM and AppleTalk interface, too.

Only by using a program that converts PS files into PCL,
such as GhostScript.  If you're running some Unix-like OS
it works very well, under DOS/Windows it's doable but
clumsy (won't work if your program expects to talk directly
to a PS printer), if you've got a Mac I don't know if it can
be done at all.

No.

Plus AppleTalk interface.

No it isn't.  The only upgrade available for 4L is extra 1MB RAM.
All other non-M model LJ4s, including the 4P as you say, can be
upgraded with PostScript later but the 4L can't.

You are looking at a 4*P*, which can indeed be upgraded with PS,
as can all other series 4 LaserJets as of today _except_ the 4L.
The only expansion option available for it is 1MB extra RAM.
(At least that's what HP says.  If someone knows of an unsupported
way to expand the 4L otherwise, please let us know.)

There is no way to upgrade the 4L to print PostScript.  The main
other difference between the two is in the performance of their
respective formatters.  The 4ML has a much more powerful formatter.
It uses an Intel 80960KA at 18.5 MHz processor (32 bit RISC),
whereas the 4L uses a 16 MHz Motorolla 68000.

If you need a PostScript printer, then you may want to look at
the 4MP.  It too has a faster formatter than its PCL-only mate, the
4P.  Unlike the 4L, the 4P *can* be upgraded to PostScript but its
clock only runs at 16 MHz, compared to 20 MHz on the 4MP. (Both use
the Intel 80960).  The 4MP has the added benefit of 600 DPI resolution.
