Hi,
I tried to figure out whether Berkeley DB could be considered to be an
1. in memory database system?
2. real time database system?
3. distributed database system?

Potentially, if configured that way. Read the description of
the "file" parameter of DB->open, here:

http://www.sleepycat.com/docs/api_c/db_open.html

Quote:>3. distributed database system?

Potentially, if configured that way. Start here:

http://www.sleepycat.com/docs/ref/rep/intro.html

Quote:>2. real time database system?

What does that mean?

1. Industrial Strength Real-Time Operating System for 486/Pentium Systems

ATTENTION REAL TIME ENTHUSIASTS!!!

Please visit http://www.modcomp.com/fr_wp.html to learn more about the
capabilities of REAL/IX.  This white paper applies to the "Motorola" Port
of the REAL/IX Operating system, however the concepts found in the paper
apply to MODCOMP's REAL/IX PX(tm) which is a port of the REAL/IX Operating
System to 486/Pentium ISA/PCI Systems.

[SYNOPSIS]
MODCOMP's White Paper (Concepts and Characteristics) provides an overview
of the REAL/IX Operating System for technical users who may or may not be
familiar with the internal structure of other UNIX operating systems. It
describes how the system works, including the standard features included in
the Motorola port of the UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. UNIX System V
operating system and the extensions added to provide realtime performance.

If you are into REAL TIME Operating Systems this is a must read!
