Cisco Catalyst 3500 Switch Deployment Opinions??

Cisco Catalyst 3500 Switch Deployment Opinions??

Post by Andrew Vog » Fri, 07 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I am connecting three sites for a customer. Site A is 3000 ft. from
Site B and Site B is 7000 ft. from Site C.  These sites form a letter
"L".  Single mode fiber connects these sites.

Do you see any problems with this setup?? Would anyone suggest another
cisco switch option or configuration?

Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions!

Network Layout:

Site B-------------Site A

Site C

Site A:
One - Cisco WS-C3548-XL-EN (48-port 10/100 +two port 1000BaseX,
Enterprise Edition)
with
One - Cisco WS-G5486 (1000BaseLX/LH GBIC)

Site B:
One - Cisco WS-C3548-XL-EN (48-port 10/100 +two port 1000BaseX,
Enterprise Edition)
with
Two - Cisco WS-G5486 (1000BaseLX/LH GBIC)

Site C:
One - Cisco WS-C3524-XL-EN (24-port 10/100 + two-port 1000BaseX,
Enterprise Edition)
with
One - Cisco WS-G5486 (1000BaseLX/LH GBIC)

The fiber is in place and cannot be changed/altered.

Thanks,
Andy

Looks OK, the LH modules (WS-5486) over single mode fiber, are good for
32000 ft. max, your sites are well behind this limit.
So far my experience with the 3524's is good, except for autonegotiation of
link, it does not work well in any switch, if you have old NIC's, be sure
you set the ports right, do not expect auto to work.

Here is a link to the Cisco page for GB mod.

1. Catalyst 3500 switching method

I'm new to the world of Cisco networking...

I have reached a section in the CCNA study guide explaining the three
switching types:

- Store and forward
- Cut-through
- FragmentFree

We use the Catalyst 3500 and the odd 3750. All three switching methods
seem to have their own benefits. What is the default method used on new
Cisco switches? Is this something than can be configured from within
IOS?

Thanks,

Paul
