        The disc is going bad. Erasables do that.

        You will probably find that a full format takes a long time
        now and gives less than the usual amount of free space; that's
        because sectors recognized as bad are taken out of service.

        If sectors are going bad between formats, they are going bad
        in use and the disc is worn out.

in erase cycles.

Despite specification numbers of the order of a thousand cycles,
