Fw: Got a new CDRW but I have Questions.........

Post by bri » Wed, 09 Jan 2002 14:21:17

I placed an order at "The House of Computers" for an AOpen 20x10x40x Eide
CDRW one week ago.  Today I received my package and in it was an Acer CRW
2410A or 24x20x40x CDRW.  To say the least I was very surprised to receive
this unit.  Does anyone know if this ACER CRW 2410A is any good?  I can't
find any reviews.   Should I return it and get what I originally requested?

I'm willing to keep it if it will do the job and last for a while.

Any comments would be great.
 Thanks
 Brian

You got exactly what you ordered.

AOpen IS Acer... Acer Open. (vs. Acer OEM)

I agree that AOPEN and ACER are the same company. How could the drives be
the same thing?  The AOPEN is rated a 20x10x40x while the Acer is a
24x10x040x.  The AOPEN is suppose to support DMA and from what I've found
the Acer drive does not (only PIO 4).
Assuming the ACER only supports PIO4, would I see much of a difference?

Ah, I missed the speed difference... My bad.

You ordered a 20x10x40, You received a 24x10x40.
Looks to me like the vendor ran out of the original
drives, and gave you the next higher speed model,
rather than put you on "back-order"...

BTW, AOpen/Acer uses several different OEM
suppliers... If you ordered 10 of the same model
drives, you may get several different manufacturer's
chassis all with the AOpen/Acer label on them.
(I've seen them use Toshiba, Lite-On, Samsung, etc).

Does the unit that you received have "Burn-Proof" (or
"Waste-Proof", yadda yadda)? If not, then I'd consider
sending it back... Otherwise, I'd give it a try and see how
well it performs.

Get a copy of Nero CD Speed from:
http://www.cdspeed2000.com and check it out. ;)

The speed difference between PIO Mode 4 and
DMA33 isn't worth considering for a CDRW, IMHO.
(24X burn speed = 3.6Mbits/Sec). There may be a little
more CPU usage with PIO-4 vs. DMA33, though, but
if you have a decent CPU (P-II or higher), I don't think
that will be an issue.

Cheers!

1. having problems with my new cdrw and GEAR

Yesterday, I bought the Yamaha CRW4260t, and tried recording with Gear. (I
have version 4.02) Gear won't come up with the cdr! My computer says that
it's there. I also went on gear's website, and it says that the version 4.02
supports the Yamaha 4200 series. Any help from anybody would be appreciated.
