- So I got a 1040ste. It's really cool.

Hook it up to a couple of external speakers.  Get STEDEMO.LZH (or
.PRG) from atari.archive.  Get STEPLAY and some good Noisetracker
mods.  You're all set!  Show an Amiga user. ;^)

- Anyway, how do I do the 'startgem' on the ste? It won't work, but I
- seem to remember seeing a different way of doing the same thing.

Select the program to want to autoboot.  Select Install Application
from the Options menu, select AUTO, and save the desktop.

Quick tip: if you want the desktop to come up in medium resolution
without the use of STE_FIX.PRG, change the 12 to 13 in the fifth line
of DESKTOP.INF.

- Where can I get a copy of this STE_FIX.PRG ?

It should come with your language disk.  I don't even use mine; it's
just another thing in the AUTO folder.  Editing DESKTOP.INF is much
better.
