MiNT & MiNTNet Questions

MiNT & MiNTNet Questions

Post by Jared Addingt » Tue, 06 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I've been working on getting MiNT & MiNTNet up and running so I can use
its protocol capabilities since I can't get CAB to cooperate.  I recently
downloaded and installed the newest version of the TAF MiNT package that I
could locate.  However, the versions in the package are still a little
old.  It has version 1.12 of MiNT and version .70 of MiNTNet.

What I am wondering is, 1: What is the newest version of MiNT available?
2: What must I do to upgrade the existing versions
if the two I have installed?
and 3: What needs to be done to set it up for the
various protocols?  I have a dynamically
allocated SLIP right now but will probably
switch to PPP soon if I can get it going.

Any help with answering any of these questions would be much appreciated!

Jared

MiNT & MiNTNet Questions

Quote:>version 1.12 of MiNT and version .70 of MiNTNet

to my knowledge 1.12 is the latest _stable_ version of MiNT. i may
be wrong though since i've been using it for some months already.
(i got mine at ftp.cnam.fr:/pub/Atari/Mint/mint112b.zoo but it can
be found on all major atari/mint sites -- use archie)

i use 0.80 but there is a version 0.90 of MiNTNet available.
you may look for net-090.tgz
  at  pascal.zedat.fu-berlin.de:/atari/mint/mintnet/net    (160.45.10.6)

Now, regarding :

the "slip.xif" driver provided serves for SLIP, CSLIP and PPP(partly) protocols .
however if you have a SLIP/CSLIP dial-up connection thru modem, it is
*really a good idea* to get the hsmodem7 patch to fix rts/cts problems.
    (hsmoda07.lzh on ftp.cnam.fr:/pub/Atari/Telecomm)

Then you need something to dial in, like dip (dip-337u-01.tgz ),
which can recognize dynamic IP address - i think.

otoh, if you have a ppp link, the pppd+chat package really works fine
(ppp-212.tgz ...).

And last, in order to use CAB with MintNet you need a new cab.ovl.
i fetched mine at the same place (mint_cab.tgz) but it may not be
up-to-date...don't know the latest version.

hope this helped

bye,
 fab.

The newest version from Atari (and also the last) is version 1.12, the
version you have. However, several kind MintNuts have patched 1.12 so
much that it has been renamed to FreeMint, and is now at version 1.12.5.
You should be able to find it at any half-decent FTP site. The latest
version of MintNet is 0.90, and you should be able to find it at the same
place.
:                         2: What must I do to upgrade the existing versions
:                            if the two I have installed?
Very little. Replace /c/auto/mint(np).prg, and replace the MintNet
drivers (socket.xdd and slip.xif, IIRC) in /c/mint with the newer
versions, and you should be set.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what's involved in going from SLIP to PPP, since I
went with PPP right away. You'll need the pppd-2.12 package, which again,
should be on any good ftp site. It should be a matter of writing a chat
script (I can send you mine if you wish).
: Any help with answering any of these questions would be much appreciated!
No problem!

1. MintNet & slip & inetd, talk, finger, X questions

Hello all!

I've recently been able to get MintNet up and running thanks to the
availability of Mint v1.12 in binary format. I have a slip connection going
just fine with telnet, ftp, and gopher all talking to the real world.

The problem is, I have been trying to get ntalk, ntalkd, inetd, and X up and
running without much success. My system is a 1040STe w/Adspeed STe 16mhz
accelerator, 14.4k modem, mono/color, with a 32 meg minix partition (k:) just
for mintnet.

That said, here's the problem:

with inetd, I get:
/pipe/log: file not found

with ntalkd, I get:
/pipe/log: file not found
/pipe/log: file not found
<27> Dec 27 23:07:52 talkd[67]: chdir: /dev: file not found

Are these problems related? Are they easily repairable? I'm not sure I know
what I am doing yet, but I seem to be on the right track.

As for X windows, I think my problem is based on zoo not extracting the
filenames correctly. Is there a zoo program which will give me the correct
filenames with complete extensions?

Frustrated/Excited,
Steve
