NEW/IMPROVED ATARI BBS LIST June 9,1999

Post by Doctor Cl » Fri, 11 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I am pleased to announce this is the most up to date list that I have
put together.  All the numbers that could be found on www.holyoak.com
were recompiled into the following.  This is sent to you to update your
records so that innocent people aren't called in the middle of the night
due to wrong numbers. (Like I've been doing all day. ;)  )

        Take care fellow Atarians,

        Doctor Clu / Greg Goodwin

PS:  For updated information on this list, since I publish it every so
often, please write to:

Atari BBS List  6/09/99

Maintained by Trevor Holyoak <tre...@holyoak.com>

Please keep me informed with updates to the list and I'll post revisions
as necessary.  In particular, if one of the BBS's is within your local
calling area, please give them a call and let me know whether they're
currently operational.

All boards are assumed to be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week unless otherwise noted.

The format of the individual entries is below.
Note that each entry uses at least five lines (all of which are
less than 40-columns in order to make this easily 8bit readable):
"Type" indicates the type of hardware used to run the board.
"Status" is whether the board was up or not the last time it was
checked.
"Status Date" tells you when the entry was last updated.
  --
There can be one or more lines of "Notes".

An asterisk (*) next to the board's phone number indicates that entry
has been updated since the last version of this list.

What about PayBax BBS, supporting ST and 8-bit? We've only been here for 11
years!

And you missed the other members in the Forem net as well!

I'm sorry to report that the Atari Scene is no more. I talked to the
Sysop, right before he closed it down. Seems the number of callers each
day wasn't enough to justify the cost of keeping the BBS up and running.

Sad, but happens a lot anymore-with the 'Net and all...

I think the biggest problem is finding software that will work with whatever
BBS software you are using. (and if its even still supported?) It is hard
these days. I think Octopus is still supported, but aside from it, is any
Atari BBS software still officially supported? I use BBS Express! ST and it
was supported up to this year, when the author made a cross-country move and
had stated that further support was up in the air. I purchased Ratsoft v2
once, and never ever got a reply from the author. ($99 too!) Oh well...

Personally, I'm still working on linking my TT and Mega ST to make my BBS
available via Telnet. Its a long, hard (obstacle ridden) road though... ;-)

Arguably the most popular software over here is Semper (an update released a
few months ago) as the mailer, Jetmail (very recently updated) as the tosser
and LED (an update promised soon) as the OLR.

As you can see there is still some support, albeit possibly not for much
longer.

What is the problem is that no-one has responded to my question (in NeST)
asking if there was any chance of getting the States back into the
distribution.

If you can find a board with a gateway he could address all his mail
