Cab and wav/au ?

Post by Martin Byttebi » Mon, 26 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hello everyone,

I wonder how I can play a *.au sound file whilst I'm online with Cab
(with Mint/Mintnet). I know one can use Looknsee (seigsmir) for *.wav
files (it works great) but are there some programs that displays
*.au?

Thanks
Martin

There is a software for ATARI, I think PD or shareware, that can
convert .au-files in several other formats like f.e. .wav.

After converting you can play the file in a wav-player-programm

LPS123 supports almost all sound formats, Martin.  It should work under
MiNT - I haven't tried it, but it works fine with TOS 1.02, 1.04 and 2.05
at least.

Yes, after all, shouldn't it be obvious that She created Atari first, so
that the rest of the work could be finished in just 6 days? <G>

Long Play Sample (LPS123.TTP) will play both .wav and .au as a helper
app for CAB. Works under MiNT, but I once checked running processes
with PS.CPX after using it and it leaves something listed as "zombie"
each time you run it. Each seemed to have a memory usage of 0 bytes
and I couldn't get rid of them. As I'm not that clear what a zombie
is, it might pay to check it out first. The program works like a charm
under single TOS.

No hits.  You sure it wasn't lps123?

Make a "Shell" for LPS123 (or any other TTP) that will run a TTP without
opening a window at all, and you have a winner.  All it has to do is accept
the command line and pass it along to the designated TTP.  For me, running
a prog without letting it touch the existing display is the tough part.

I've take a look on Umich and I only can find LPS123.LZH which btw
works fine with Cab under Mint.

What holds you not to write such an usefull program?

Thank you anyway for your reply.

I for one sure wish you or someone would write such a program. I have looked high and
low for one that fits my requirements. I even bought Lattice C with the intention of
doing it myself, but after almost a year, I am no C programmer.

You mentioned a couple crucial requirements, but for what it's worth, here's my full
list:

1.  playback _only_ of
    a.  AVR
    b.  WAV
    c.  AU
    d.  AIF(C)

2.  8 or 16 bit capable

3.  stereo capable

4.  gem-clean (runs under tos or magic or multitos)

5.  AV protocol aware (A MUST!!!)

6.  does not draw a window, dialog box or anything else on the screen! Just plays the
    sound!

7. for samples with non-atari frequencies, should re-sample upon loading, then play it.

8.  works on a falcon.

9.  clears the buffer, so I don't hear remnants of previously played sounds (a problem
I have with 16-bit sounds in snd_play by Richard Kurz and SAM by Scott Sanders.)

10. does not turn the keyclick off (or if it does, turns it back on after playback is done
playing) (a problem I have with bng_play by Vanel Remi.)

I was willing to pay US$275 for Lattice C just to get this program on my hard drive, so
you can easily guess I would register someone's shareware offering in a second.

Please?? :)

Try the Book by Kernighan & Ritchie (I don't remember the english
title). Then jump into the cold water and start writing. At least thist
helped me.

Is there a good Documentation of it somewhere? I'd like to add it to my
Falcon MIDI player I am develloping.

Maybe I'll add a feature to do this as well...

How about trigonometic Interpolation. It is said to be very fast and
should get the best results here... (Just if someone is goning to write
it)

LPS123.ttp works fine under Mint indeed. After reading your message
I've checked the running processes with Xtask and yes LPS.ttp seems to
leave sometime each time it has run.
As a complete Mint dummy (I'm using Mint but that's all) I wonder if
this could do some harm. Has someone an idea about that?

Heh, well I'd have to learn GEM programming first, all I know is the
standard libraries right now... :P  (though no one wants it to display
anything... Maybe if there is no command line, it'll run in interactive
mode, and with a command tail it'll just play the sample.)

I believe we had a report that it worked fine on a Falcon.  Have you set
any environment strings for LPS, or have you tried a simple drag & drop
operation?

I just downloaded LPS123 and couldn't get it to work on my Falcon with Magic.
The TOS app in Magic comes up after either double clicking on the TTP file or
trying to drag a .WAV to the program icon and the system just sits for a
moment, then I get a Boom, ooh! crash (got SAM loaded, could that be part of
the problem?).

I looked at all the switches in the manual and figured I shouldn't have to go
through some archaic command line, was I wrong?
