MRTG accuracy problems

Post by Bria » Thu, 10 Jul 2003 12:57:38

Hello,

I have MRTG running on 3 of our servers, each at a different site.  They
are all running the same application which uses a sustained amount of
bandwidth over a few hours, usually around 5-10 Mb/s.  The application
allows us to limit the bandwidth.

On 2 of the sites, the MRTG bandwidth graphs are very close to the
bandwidth limit we have set up.  On the 3rd site however, it is showing
~1/3 more bandwidth than we have the limit set to (ie, if the limit is
5 Mb/s, we're seeing 7Mb/s.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?  Are there any tools I can use to
test the bandwidth use?  How about something that can reliably generate
traffic at a given limit?

Thanks.

You didn't say which OS you're using.  Most provide some sort of
mechanism, for example, you can use the Performance Monitor under
Windows.

Ah, right.  It's running on Linux.

Hmmm, I haven't tried this myself.  I took a look around and KDE has
something called KNetLoad.  It works by parsing /proc/net/dev.  My
guess is that file needs to be polled and the speed calculated from
the polling time and the delta in the bytes.  There must some utility
if you don't use KDE.

1. MRTG and mrtg.cfg-problem!

hello all,

i have generated a mrtg.cfg file with cfgmaker

an the result is the following:

 it generates the web-report with:

 `Daily' Graph (5 Minute Average)
  with png "bytes per seconds"

 `Weekly' Graph (30 Minute Average)
 with png "bytes per seconds"

 `Monthly' Graph (2 Hour Average)
  with png "bytes per seconds"

`Yearly' Graph (1 Day Average)
 with png "bytes per seconds"

looks nice, but here the things (graphs) i REALLY want to have in the
result page:

total traffic per day
total traffic per week
total traffic per month
total traffic per year
traffic splitted in transfer-protocols (http, ftp etc.)

how can i configure that?
and how i know which informations i can get from the router?
yes, i read the pages on
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/ but i doesn`t
understand many things ;-)

thanks a lot...
