Can MRTG capture page count on printers??

Post by bwesterink.. » Fri, 05 Jan 2001 12:07:31

Hi there!

I would like to use MRTG to capture the number of
pages printed on each printer. My HP printer only
gives me the total page count (i.e. 48930)
Ive seen some CFG samples that deal with page
throughput per hour, but I am really looking for
the actual number of pages printed in a 5 minute
timespan. Not sure if I need to write a Perl
script to accomplish this...

Greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks
Bart

If the printer has a MIB OID that returns the number of pages printed,
then just configure MRTG to poll that MIB OID. Or if you can write a
script that retrieves the info you can configure MRTG to run this script
and graph the numbers retrieved by the script. The line in the cfg file
to modify is the "target" line, do something like:
target[host]:  '/path/script'
There are some restrictions, check out:

See the part about External Monitoring Scripts

1. MRTG - Problem monitoring # pages printed on a printer

Hello,

I am setting up (or trying to) a config file for monitoring the number
of pages printed on a Ricoh laser printer. I only get a flat line at 0
pages, though. If I put "gauge" as an option, I get a fine graph
showing me about 87,000 pages printed but I would rather have a five
minute average as is default.

Target[itlaser]:.1.3.6.1.2.1.43.10.2.1.4.1.1&.1.3.6.1.2.1.43.10.2.1.4.1.1:p
MaxBytes[itlaser]: 100000
Options[itlaser]: nopercent, integer
Title[itlaser]: ITLaser
PageTop[itlaser]: <H1>ITLaser Ricoh 220</H1>

I don't think it's the printer reporting anything wrongly, since an
snmpwalk on the OID shows the following:

snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.100.40 1.3.6.1.2.1.43.10.2.1.4.1.1
mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 87761

And after printing three pages:

snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.100.40 1.3.6.1.2.1.43.10.2.1.4.1.1
mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 87764

Thank you for any help.

/Christian
